Applications are the tools we use to get work done. Applications are stored inside the Applications folder.

Use Finder to investigate the contents of the Applications folder:
Ensure Finder is ‘active’ by clicking on the blue / grey face in the Dock. Then…
Choose Go -> Applications from the menu bar.

A Finder window will appear, displaying the contents of the Applications folder.

Applications such as Safari, Photos, Mail, Pages, Microsoft Word, are all stored inside the Applications folder.
Applications, and the Dock
The Dock, located along the bottom of the screen, provides shortcuts to apps that live inside the Applications folder. None of these apps are actually stored in the Dock. You can customise the items that appear in the Dock to suit your own needs.
