In macOS, whether it’s a simple email account, or a more fully featured account type where email is one of its many features, they are all classified as Internet Accounts.
Add your account credentials in System Preferences->Internet Accounts.

Apple, Google, Yahoo!, AOL & Microsoft are all popular providers of free personal email addresses. Such accounts also include cloud storage for email, calendars, contacts, notes, and more.
If you have one of these accounts, simply select your account provider on the right, and follow the onscreen instructions.

Once your account has been added, its basic features can be managed through Apple’s suite of Internet Account related applications:
- Contacts
- Calendars
- Notes

Depending on the service provider, your ‘internet account’ may simply be an email address; or email can be one part of a more comprehensive product.
